ETC for Mobil Devices

Post by sinister » Tue Jul 27, 2010 9:33 pm

I searched the forum, and found a few posts asking the same thing. However, that was a few years ago. Would it be possible to develop ETC for a mobile device such as the iphone, android, etc.? Would be extremely useful for all the spare time we usually have when away from the house.

Is there a show of hands here for people that have iPhones?

iPhone

Post by guitarfreak » Sat Jul 31, 2010 6:27 pm

I am contemplating buying an iPhone in the next month or two (once I have the cash).

I think an iPhone version would be great. I anticipate that I would use the iPhone instead of my laptop most of the time when I go out. With an iPhone version, I could ear train on the commuter bus, etc.

bought iPhone

Since my last post, I purchased an iPhone. The iPhone apps store has some ear training apps, including a few perfect pitch apps.

I plan to check a few of these apps out to see what they have going for them. ETC would be a great addition, though.

Chris, do you think you will develop this? I can not tell you how convenient it would be to have ETC on a phone. But i would like to know so i can decide if i should get my hopes up or not =X or perhaps makes a flash version? I know the iphone doesn't support flash, but androids and the upcoming blackberry tablet does; it would be neat to use ETC on those devices as well.

I have been contacted by a developer who works with mobile devices, and that person is starting in on it.. we haven't worked out the details, but it seems like it may go forward.

What do you think would be the estimated release date of this project if it were to go through? Would it be ready by Christmas? Or would it be much after that? (Would be an excellent Christmas present :P, though Christmas is pretty soon.)

I don't know whether it changes anything, or if you already knew, but it looks like iOS finally has MIDI support. I'm guessing that would make a game like ETC much more feasible, seeing as how you wouldn't have to include a ton of audio files.

Sorry, the info I posted earlier was wrong. The MIDI stuff in iOS is only meant to allow an app to send and receive MIDI to and from external hardware--it apparently doesn't include a software synth for MIDI playback. Lame.

I have had my iPhone 4 for a while now, and none of the available absolute pitch apps I tried are really worthwhile.

Absolute Pitch Avenue definitely does something special.

Whatever you come up with, it would be great if both the iPhone app and the desktop version sync together to account for levels conquered on either platform.
